This is a way late reply but i read in several publications over the years that although tea was used where it was plentiful, Most cases the soldiers used to stain their helmets with the reddish brown ...

I soaked mine (a Vietnam unit) in warm water for about 30 minutes than reshaped the helmet in in a form that i made.
I also bought an IMA helmet and it was made of hard plastic, no cork type materi ...

Fed Ex just dropped these off. The pole sleeve on the regimental is on the wrong side but that can easily be fixed. You would not believe the price for both. (Pure silk)
