27th June 2004F Carrington @ 2nd Batt 24th Regt Foot
By Carl Daeche
A while ago I purchased a letter written by a member of the Board of Agriculture and Fisheries dated 1909 and signed Carrington. the only details I have are that he lived 1852 to 1929 and served in the Zulu War. He was the 4th Baron Carrington. The letter refers to some trouble with suffragettes and is a nice snapshot of politics at the turn of the century. the only reference I have is in Mackinnon and Shadbolts - records of service. They list him as Bt. Lieut,-Col. being mentioned in despatches for action Nov 1879.

Can anyone help with any further info and possibly a signature and photo?

PS To all the guys who are waiting I am still making the MK V Boxes. Adrian you have confused me with the orientation of the rope handles....... My research indicates that are horizontal not verticallly set? Any clarification pictures would be great.

Dear Carl,
Baron Carrington and Maj Gen Frederick Carrington (late 24th - 1844-1913) are not the same person. Rupert C Carrington may have served in the Zulu War - but I do have my notes at home. Present Lord Carrington is 6th Baron and was Foreign Secretary under PM Thatcher.

Carl & Martin,

The Hon. Rupert Clement George CARINGTON was a Lieutenant in the 3rd Battalion Grenadier Guards, present at Ulundi. He was a son of the 2nd Baron Carington.

I don't know if Peter Carrington is from the same line, unless they added an additional 'r'.

Confusingly the surname for RCG Carington is spelt with one 'R' and the title Carrington with two! (source Burke's).

Thanks everyone.

John, I think you have him - Rupert Carrington. I have looked on the internet and the birth dates marry up. The family name does only have one "r" but the title Baron Carrington has two. Peter is of the same line and the family has connections with the Grenadier Guards also.

I am keen to find any references to his activities in Zululand in 1879. John where did you find details of his attendance at Uhlundi?

Dear Carl,
1882 Army List makes reference to Medal with clasp, but no reference to Ulundi.

Woody,

Odd that Burke's has two r's, whilst Dod's only shows the one r. The family having assumed the name by royal licence in 1839 in lieu of the patronymic Smith.

Carl,

MacKinnon & Shadbolt - '...Capt. Bertie and Lieuts. Carington and Colville being present at the battle of Ulundi.'
