Date | Original Topic | 15th March 2004 | Bayonets By Andrew Holliday Could anyone tell me what bayonets were used for the Martini-Henry Rifle was it a sword bayonet or a socket bayonest, because in some films and books its a socket bayonet and in others its got sword bayonets, which did they use?

Both & more!
The socket bayonet was used by all ranks in line infantry battalions below the rank of sergeant. Sergeants of all line infantry battalions & all other-ranks of rifle regiments used the sword bayonet.
There were other variations of bayonet used in the campaign.
John Y. | 6th April 2004 | ronclayton Hi Andrew/John,
Do I recollect that Islandwhana was the first occasion the Zulu had come against the Bayonet? Would most of the 24th have fixed them or had time too?
Cheers,
Ron |
