By Tim Jenkins
Hello
My name is Tim
Im doing a project for school and it involves castles.
My castle I picked was Harlech Castle
I have been doing research over it and i thought i might put some things in about the song "Men of Harlech"
Since the song is in the movie Zulu I thought you might be able to give me info on the song.
Any info would be appreciated
Thanks Tim

Hi Tim! I'm Welsh and have a strong taste for the Zulu War but I recently dicovered, to my horror, that 'Men of Harlech' wasn't sung at Rorke's Drift!! To make it worse, I found that the words were made up for the film too! There is a link on this site or the Royal Regiment of Wales site about 'Men of Harlech'. Hope this helps Tim, Glenn.

Please tell me how you discovered that 'Men of Harlech' was not sung at Rorke's Drift.I always believed that the jury was out on this issue. Thanks Andy

'Zulu' was a great entertaining film and has really stood the test of time. It was made by an ardent Welshman - Stanley Baker. B Company at the time were members of the 24th (2nd Warwickshire) Regiment of Foot whose regimental march was 'The Warwickshire Lads'. In 1881, two years after the Zulu campaign, the regiment became 'The South Wales Borderers' to recognise its recruiting area of the Border Counties of Wales. It then adopted 'The Men of Harlech'.

Wow! I would have thought that they really sung the song at Rorkes Drift in real life.
I also didnt know that the song was made up for the movie
Now i know the song Men of Harlech might not be good to put in my report
Thanks Tim

My mum says that the words in the film were largely those she learned at school, and this was some time before the film came out (I refuse to say how long before).

My understanding of the battle was that there was little time for any singing during it. It was too frantic an affair, unlike the cat and mouse tactical battle portrayed in the film. Afterwards the defenders were far too knackered to do anything but flop down pretty much where they were, some even waking up to find they had been sleeping on bodies.

Tim-
If you go under the links section of this site, you will find a link called "Men of Harlech". It has the orignial words from the real song. This might be good to put in your report.

Tim, the song is coverd under popular myths and wasn't sung pity though it would have been a good part of the story
