Date | Original Topic | 7th December 2001 | Did you hear? By Jacob I know this is a little bit of topic of the Zulu war, but i wanted to know if you heard anything about VC's being awarded to people in Afganistan on the War Against Terroism?
Any Feedback Will Be Greatly apreciated

Not as of yet...
Peter | 10th December 2001 | John Young Peter,
Who have got to stop going to Spurs and read some papers.
There was a one line report in 'The Daily Mail' of about eight days ago. Which hinted at one of the four wounded S.A.S. men being recommended for the V.C.
John | 12th December 2001 | Peter Critchley I was given this information:
"Experience from previous conflicts suggests, although many gallantry awards won by members of SAS, full details are not usually published at the time.
Belated entries are often published in the London Gazette once the soldier has left
the SAS or the army. So it may be announced that Military Cross or a Queen's Gallantry Medal has been awarded to the a member of the SAS deployed in Afghanistan but we will not be told his name. The award of a VC can be only pure speculation at this stage and would not really fit the SAS policy of anonymity, even though the deed may warrant Britain's highest award.
The Operational Service Medal has now replaced the Campaign Service Medal (usually known as the GSM). This is expected to be awarded for the first time to servicemen involved with the peace mission in Sierra Leone (qualification details are still being worked out). Instead of clasp giving the name of the operation/campaign as with the GSM, the ribbon of the OSM will be specific to the campaign. This OSM could be awarded for Afghanistan. However, if British troops are deployed in Afghanistan in sufficient numbers, than there could a specific War Medal (i.e. like the Gulf 1992 campaign)."
Hope this helps...
