2nd December 2001Where do I start learning about the Zulu War?
By Rick Housden
I have been building model aircraft for some 30 years, but I have recently developed an interest in this particular topic. I am mainly interested in building scale models of some of the soldiers, from both sides, that fought in this war. Where do I find a concise list of refernces that discuss the uniforms and weapons they used, and the places they fought?
Thanks for any help anyoone can give me!

Well, thats quite a question Rick. I'm sure that our website colleagues...Ian, Peter, John and Martin will add their comments/advice. They are knowledgable on this.
To begin with,I'd suggest that you thoroughly go thru this web site, plus the links that they have.
Approach the war in stages. That is the political background, coupled with the early battles (Isandlwana and Rorkes Drift).
Get a copy of the following:
'Zulu War 1879' (osprey book) by Ian Knight & Ian Castle.
'The Washing of Spears' by D. Morris
'The Zulu War' by David Clammer
These are good beginning points.
My son & I built a diorama & I can provide you with details. But first I'd suggest that you begin by doing basic research.

What Stephen said is very good advice, may I also add this:get a copy of the book from Osprey named, "The British Army on Campaign 1816-1902 #3:1856-1881" Men-at Arms Series #198, this is an old one, maybe out of print. Also from Osprey:"British Forces in Zululand 1879" Elite Series #32 and last again from Osprey (I just love these Books can't you tell)"Rorke's Drift 1879" from the Campaign Series #41. Ok now for the Zulus, from Osprey again get: "ZULU" Warrior Series #14 and Osprey: "The Zulus" Elite Series #21.And check out this Web site for British Uniforms,

All of these books are available in the shop (on the left hand bar). Go to the Zulu War Publications category, and you'll find them in there.

All the best,

Peter

Rick,
I would check some of the publications listed in this web site. Ian Knight has penned some good stuff in my opinion. Also 'The Red Soldier' gives a remarkable insight into the soldiers of the day with copies of 'letters home' etc:
