Dear Gloria,
As you have found out, the AZW medal roll does not contain first names. How do know that he fought in the Zulu war - other than family hearsay - have you a medal, have you a newspaper report of his death, which regiment do you think he served in? A death certificate - may say army pensioner - 80th Foot. A marriage certificate - may say Corporal 24th Foot. Or you could try the National Archives at Kew - the soldiers' documents for those who were discharged after 1883 are in alphabetical order in WO97. Before that date you need to know the regiment.

There is a very good book in the National Archives bookshop - Readers Guide No.2 'Army Records for Family Historians' - try

Good luck.

Hello Martin
Many thanks for taking the time to reply, as you say it is only hearsay, but from past experience it is worth taking time to confirm the story. Kew seems to be the answer, as to his marriage no joy there, his death I have not sorted out yet, in the process of doing so.

Will also try the bookshop as suggested

Once again many thanks

Gloria Savory.
