20th April 2003	John Young Joe, Capt. Warren Wynne, 2nd (Field) Squadron, Royal Engineers designed and had built Fort "Tenedos" & the fort at Eshowe. Capt. Bindon Blood, and his men constructed a pontoon bridge across the Tugela (Thuleka) River, near to where a modern highway bridge now spans the river. Others were part of the Telegraph Troop, which was able to establish a telegraph line along the line of advance of 1st Division. For officers' actions in the campaign see 'The South African Campaign of 1879', by J.P. MaKinnon & S.H. Shadbolt. For the activities of the Royal Engineers see 'Red Earth, The Royal Engineers and the Zulu War 1879', which is available from the Royal Engineers Museum, Prince Arthur Road, Gillingham, Kent, U.K. - and does not cost alot of money. 26th April 2003	richard as well as civil engineering the royal engineers were responsible for; communications until the formation of the royal signals, postal services until the royal logistics corp was formed,movements until the rct was formed, and until the formation of the royal flying corps they were responsible for aviation.
