30th August 2001Ballad of Rorke's Drift
By Paul Hamner
I am a Music Librarian and have recieved an enquiry about a song called the "Ballad of Rorke's Drift". Can anyone provide details - who wrote the words and music? - has it ever been published? I believe it has appeared on a compilation CD, recorded by Cwrt Y Gollen Choir

Paul,
I will have a look in the museum archives and see what i can find. The famous actions at Rorke's Drfit and Isandhlwana have prompted many songs and poems over the years. There is a very good march called 'Rorke's Drift' written by Colonel Dick Ridings, late Coldstream Guards, who also wrote the title music for 'Dad's Army'.

I have a compilation CD with this ballad on it. The CD is called Wonderful Welsh Choirs, and the ballad is indeed by the Cwrt-y-Gollen choir. The CD is a MasterSong CD #503492. The cover mentions this web site: www.mragroup.com.au.

I was looking for the words to this ballad when I discovered this thread, so if anyone can provide them it would be appreciated. It's a nice lively ballad.

The Ballad of Rorke's Drift is also found on a CD "Heritage of Wales" (1995 Hallmark Music and Entertainment). If anyone is able to find the lyrics online please post the website. It would be greatly appreciated.
