28th December 2002 | Martin Everett Dear John,
You are probably right re D or G Companies. I have him as John James Tomkins, but I have not been able to find some documents for him in the Public Record Office at Kew. You may have more success. There is nothing in the regimental archives which suggest which company he was on 22 January. Wilfred Heaton (D Company) does not mention him in his diary. |
28th December 2002 | Martin Everett Sorry - it should have been Tompkins not Tomkins. |

Regarding John JamesTompkins, I have his date of birth as 1st August 1844 (from the Army List of 1884) and his date of birth as 1st April 1844 (from The Noble 24th) would you know which one is correct.
I have also come across two John Tompkins aged 57 in the 1901 UK Census, would you also know which one is the right one, assuming one of them is our Colour Sergeant.
