11th December 2002New warship 'Isandlwana'
By Martin Everett
You will see a news item this site - click on 'News' - about a new South African Navy corvette which is named 'Isandlwana'. The reporter is suggesting some adverse reaction to this naming in the UK. This stance is difficult to believe. The Royal Regiment of Wales (24th/41st Foot) is the only British regiment to have an alliance with a modern South African unit - 121 Infantry Battalion - this is largely a Zulu recruited unit.

Furthermore there was a British warship called HMS Zulu - a friend of mine who is still alive and well - living in Australia - as a young boy gunner was rescued from the beaches of Dunkirk in the dark days of 1940 by sailors from HMS Zulu. For more info on HMS Zulu.....

Dear Martin,

I note, as ever, the media have failed to get the name of the old 24th correct. Now the R.R.W.'s predecessors appear to be the old 6th of Foot, yet again!

Just in passing. I noticed on a TV programme about Michael Caine someone bought his old Mercedes with the registration number 2 ULU. Not a lot a people know that.

Martin,
I don't see why the press should expect some adverse reaction from the UK. As far as I am concerned I think South Africa should celebrate its victories in this way. They have a lot to be proud of.

I can tell you if in the company of a former soldier of The Warwickshire Regiment( 6th foot) please do not mention the 24 th FT (Warwickshire) to him they get rather upset they like it no more than a soldier of the South Wales Borderers( 24th Foot) would like it all ex members of infantry line regiments ( myself included Worcestershire Regiment) are very jealous of our regimental heritage. but the best piece I think was a few years ago the museum of the Warwickshires in Warwick was broken into and a large amount of their Regimental silver stolen it was of course reported in the local press, and a few days later someone of very little knowledge indeed wrote in and asked if the Siver wreath of Immrotelles was amongst the stolen silver. A Very big CLANGER indeed.
