27th November 2002VC presentation to JH Reynolds
By Lee Stevenson
Further to recent comments on this forum as to the apparent repetition of inaccuracies/errors from one book to another. From personal experience I can only say I understand just how easy it is to accept statements/information that has already appeared in print as true without questioning whether they are indeed actually correct even if conflicting information is staring you in the face. With that in mind I would just like to hold up my own hands as another guilty party and point out one further significant error that appeared in the Rorke's Drift Doctor. The presentation of the Victoria Cross to Surgeon Major JH Reynolds, AMD did not take place on the 16th July 1879 at St. Paul's as I, for one, have stated in print, but did in fact take place at a special parade in Pinetown on the 26th August, under the command of Col. R. Glyn 1st/24th. (in this instance I chose to ignore/missed the entry in the VC Register [PRO WO98/4], which quite clearly stated that JHR's VC was presented on the 26/8/79)

I am most grateful to Martin Everett who first pointed this out to me and also to Ron in KZN for obtaining copies of the relevant contemporary South African newspapers who actually reported the ceremony.

Where would we be without all you 'eagle-eyed' Zulu War enthusiasts !!
