6th November 2002'Zulu' Missing footage...
By Leigh Tarrant
Am I going mad or did I recall when seeing 'Zulu' back in the late sixties or early seventies - that there was yet another Zulu attack towards the end of the film on some prints going around at that time?? (Or was there some sort of edit made to make the final attack shorter) I know offiically 'Zulu' had a running time of 138 mins, but was there a lost 'roadshow' edition flying around at some point not mentioned by film historians??? Take note of 'The Alamo' for example. The lost footage of more than 30 mins came to light many many years after the initial premiere prints of the film back in 1960. Eventually the lost footage was tracked down in Canada of all places. (Later released by Warners on VHS special editions and laser discs) Also was there ever a souvenier brochure to the film 'Zulu' on its original release at the Plaza Lower Regent Sreet here in London??

Also, I forgot to mention - There was two scenes of Private Cole standing fast outside the back of the hospital, where he is standing guard over Mr Witt....One of these is omitted from recent cuts of Zulu that I've seen.
Shed a light anyone??!!! Finally, there is a few seconds missing from the point where the Zulu's mount the hill for the first time, and the British are seen just staring at them after the Music finale ends.....this is where the intermission came in, in the West End screenings....There's a nasty cut back in when we next abruptly cut to the Zulu's making tracks to their first assault poistions...Some prints I've seen even judder at this point, making it look like an unavoidable edit point.........Sorry to be pinickadee!!!

Leigh,

Don't know about lost footage, but I can help you over the brochure.

The brochure was fairly naff - all things considered. Mainly b/w stills with alot of information about the Army Benevolent Fund, which received part of proceeds from the Royal showing, I did have one a few years back, but like alot of things it appears to have vanished over the years.

I don't know anything about missing footage, but the scene you mention -- where the British are seen just staring at the Zulus after the music finale ends -- did you ever notice that some of the soldiers are not wearing their tunics?

How could this have escaped the eye of Colour Sergeant Bourne, who had just ordered Hitch to do his tunic up?

And did you ever notice that at the end -- when the Zulus return -- that the hospital is briefly shown unburnt and intact? Only when the Zulus retreat, with their shields above their heads, do you see smoke rising from the remains of the hospital.
