Dear Steve,

There is a list of defenders of Rorke's Drift on 22/23 January on this site. Click on 'The Battle' then page down. However, many former members of 2nd Battalion 24th Foot said they at Rorke's Drift - which they were - as the battalion was based at the mission station until mid-April 1879 but they were not incvolved in the battle. If you have a name, then I might be able to fill in the gaps.

Steve,

If your e-mail address reflects your surname, it is feasible that the name was Anglicized to Anderson. If so your relative was effectively the first casualty of action, and there are two views as to how he met his fate - one by "friendly-fire" - the other by enemy fire.
