i've just obtained a medical document titled
"medical examination of recruits and re-engaged men" dated 1880 and forwarded to a surgeon of the 2/24th.
the name seems to be AFUSACK but i'm not 100 percent sure.
would anybody have any information please?

Glynne,

Certainly no 'AFUSACK' in 1880 Hart's Army List, any idea as to where and when the document completed? Gibraltar perhaps? If so it might narrow the search down to there.

Surgeons at that time had ceased to listed on the regimental establishment, just to add to the fun!

Dear Glynne,
Most recruits at that time would have come through the 25th Brigade Depot at Brecon and would have examined by the Army Surgeon there. Although quite a number of recruits for the 24th would have been attested and medically examined at other army barracks in the UK (or even recruited locally by the battalion). The surgeons often signed their name incorporating their rank 'Surg Maj' before or after their name' and also 'MD' after their name which makes difficult to decipher. I can give you some names but that may not help you:

F Adams (based at Brecon)
Francis Howard MD (based at Colchester)
Frank Edward Barrow (based at Newport)
R Thornton (based at Brecon)
Richard Charles Colman Hickson MD was 1/24
