Date | Original Topic | 9th September 2002 | Tracing Rorke's Drift men By Patrick Thomas Further to my earlier query. So, of the 141, (Chard list), or 148, (Bourne's second list), men of the Rorke's Drift garrison, how many have been tracked down? | Date | Replies | 10th September 2002 | Martin Everett Dear Patrick,
I am not sure what you mean by 'tracked down'. I assume you mean confirmed that they were present on 22/23 January. Not all the soldiers' documents have survived. Secondly, not all have 'present at Rorke's Drift' marked on their documents. The soldiers of the 24th have been documented in 'The Noble 24th' by Norman Holme. However, new information comes to light every day. There are a number of people who visit this site regularly who have comprehensive personal records of the defenders some details of which has not been published. If you wish to know some information about a particular soldier who was a RD - then I am sure there is someone out there who will be able to supply it. | 13th September 2002 | Patrick Thomas I am intrigued to know what sort of lives these men lead after they left the army.
Are there any plans to update the information contained in The Noble 24th, with some of this new and as yet unpublished material? and what about those men from the AHC, RA etc.
Talking of which, thank you Gillian for your e-mail about Thomas Lewis most interesting!!
| 16th September 2002 | Alun Jones When you say you are interest in the men do you mean VC's or all the defenders?
drop me a line ....... | 16th September 2002 | Peter Weedon Alun
I have tried to email you about one of the defenders but the message keeps being returned. Is there a problem with your email address?
Peter Weedon | 17th September 2002 | Lee Stevenson As to what became of the individual defenders of Rorke's Drift. Well to date some 95 to 100 men have been traced either to the grave or at least to a date of death, whilst quite a few more are on our 'work in progress' list !
Are their plans to publish any of this research?...well watch this space !!
Lee | 19th September 2002 | Lee Stevenson The Keynsham Light Horse site has photos of 70 odd graves and memorials to Rorke's Drift men. Well worth a visit....!! |
