25th April 2002I came up here to build a bridge
By Alan Critchley
Here I am again, trying to explain my reasons for starting and maintaining this website and my hopes for the way it should proceed.
I've said that as an amateur, I wanted to share what (very) little knowledge I have, and learn from those who know more.
There is no reward gained on mine or Peter's part in devoting time, effort and expense to maintaining and adding to this site. We do it for the same reasons that people visit it, we're gripped by the subject.
We welcome contributions to the Discussion Forum and are gratified when people compliment us on the content and presentation of the site.
I have however been saddened to notice of late, a tendency for elements to snipe at others from behind their own biscuit barrels. I thought we were all on the same side! We should be enhancing our knowledge of this fascinating topic by sharing what we know or what we think and to help clarify areas which are unclear and maybe come to a concensus. Polarisation is slowly happening. ("This is not helpful". as Chelmsford said in Zulu Dawn).
The Discussion Forum should be for the reasons stated and not for personal ends. I think a disservice is done to the paticipants of the Anglo-Zulu War by the tone and motivations sometimes displayed in correspondence.

Alan,
You and Peter are doing a great job on this site. Thanks for trying to maintain a high level of decorum in the discussion forum.

Alan,

Well said! - Let us keep the site for those who are, as you say, "enhancing our knowledge of this fascinating topic by sharing what we know or what we think" The forum is brilliant for this!

Keep up the work on the best site on the internet for the Zulu War!

Dave

Dear All,
For some time I have stood at the side lines & watched the petty sniping between various groups interested in the Anglo-Zulu War. Alan is maintaining an excellent site and it should not be drawn in to this sorry state of affairs. Those who feel that they have a certain point of view should also welcome those of others. After all, none of us took part in the conflict; non of us had to live in those testing times. Either Zulu or British, these [often] brave chaps are now no more. This site is a tribute to them all. Lets keep our 21st century egos out of it.

Dear Alan,Peter

Alan, I agree with you completely. May I add this, per the 'Discussion Forum Rules' :

RULE 1. "Offending messages will be deleted or responded to, but either way WILL NOT BE TOLERATED." You have the power to STOP any unacceptable posts.

RULE 7. "We reserve the right to remove any message, for any reason."

Next, may I suggest that you appoint someone to 'watch over' the forum. Because the two of you work hard to keep this site up and running.

Well, that's my two cents......many 'Thanks' to you both for the best Web site.

Gary

I think its not easy someone may have opinions that the majority disagree with,I think that even tho I disagree with them I don't want them banned from the site.
This site is well ran and can take any critiscms on the chin,ok lets respect each other, the defenders at rorkes drift probably disagreed with each other from time to time.

My compliments to the gentleman that keep this site functioning each day. I am always amazed at the very knowledgeable people that share their expertise on the discussion form. I visit several times a week and look very forward to what I may learn each time. As a twenty-year enthusiast (and going strong) of the Zulu War, I am glad to correspond with other like-minded people and name this site as easily the best on the subject. Keep up the GREAT work!

Hi Alan,

Alan please do not change your stance - this is democracy in action. Warmest regards, Lynne.
