By Alan Critchley
We are implementing a new style discussion forum.
You may well noticed a small change in the look of things.

The new forum is designed to deal with our growing user base a little better, and it should also make things easier to find, as well as organise.

To see any of the forums listed on the main page, you need to register. You can do this from the menu at the top right of the page. Once you have filled in your details (note: you only need to worry about the fields with a *) you will be sent an email which a link in it. Click on this link to activate your account and you're off and running!

You'll now have access to the whole discussion system, and you'll also be able to administer your own member account.

One of the main benefits of this new system is that your email address is now secure from the web programmes which mine them for spam purposes. You can also choose whether to show your email address to other users. By default, your address is hidden.

Once you have posted a message, you can also amend it or delete it, which should help in the event of spelling issues etc

Finally, we'd love to hear your feedback! Let us know what you think, and if there's anything you'd like to see, we'll do our best to accomodate it (new forums etc).

This will go live tomorrow (31 August 2005) but is available for those who wish to register today at http://www.rorkesdriftvc.com/forum. We hope the transition is smooth. Any problems, please contact us.

How will the accumulated 'history' of posts be carried forward and remain accessible?

Will this discussion forum still be operative as well as the new one?

Hi there,

Just to be clear, THIS forum will NOT be deleted or taken offline, however it will no longer be possible to post messages (either new topics or replies) to it.

Unfortunately, it's not going to be possible to migrate all the messages from this forum into the new format, which is a real shame, however, we believe that the benefits of the new system, over time, will make everyone's experience much better..

It should be much easier to find the information you are interested in, and also to monitor topics as they develop.

We also plan to open up the moderation of the forum to those who have demonstrated a keen interest in the development of this website of the past 5 years.

Please let us know what you think, and if you have any questions, just send them on over! :)

Just had a look. Quite modern. Will we still be able to refer back to topics posted on the old forum for a while? Are there any plans to eventually scrap the old forum entirely or will it exist in webspace for ever?

Help! I registered but have not received an email, nor can I log on. What is the procedure for the next step?

Hi there,

I've just had a look and both Paul and Keith are listed in the memberlist, and further to that I also created a brand new account with a hotmail email address as the contact, and recieved the verification email immediately.

It may be worthwhile checking your junkmail folders/spam quarantine, as the admin address was [email protected] so it could have been filtered off.

Dawn: Indeed, we will keep the old system online, however they will not interact as such. You will need to put any topics on the new system.

All the best,

Peter
