16th August 2005Redvers Buller on film
By Paul Bryant-Quinn

Many of you will be aware of the discovery several years ago of some 830 films, dating from c. 1899 to shortly before the First World War, made by Sagar Mitchell and James Kenyon, two pioneering film makers from Blackburn. A series of three documentaries about this unique collection was shown recently on British television, and the BBC has produced two DVDs to go with them.

A number of the films in this collection deal with the second Anglo-Boer War, and four military celebrities of that campaign, Lord Roberts, Lord Kitchener, Robert Baden-Powell and Redvers Buller, were filmed by Mitchell and Kenyon on a visit to Manchester. I believe that the archive references are M&K 310-11 and M&K 422.
