Does anybody know what "field punishment" would have consisted of in 1979?

If you can be more specific I can look up Queen's Regulations that were in force in 1879. if query is regarding a particular soldier then the offence may be detailed on his papers in the PRO at Kew.

Sounds like outdoor bondage intended to immobilize and publicly humiliate the offender.

Although flogging had been abolished in the peace time army it could still be used on active service and was during the Anglo-Zulu War.
