By Ron Lock
Escaping from the fury of battle with Julian W. for a few days, I am shortly going to the Norther Transvaal with the purpose of visiting the site od Sikukhuni'[s Stronghold, captured by a British column in 1879, lead by Sir Garnet Wolseley, and comprising British infantry, colonial cavalry and Swazi mercenaries.

The stronghold is "out in the sticks" and seldom visited. Anyone with a special interest in this campaign (S.A.G.M. and bar 1879) wanting me to take a specific look at anything whilst there - time permitting - please make mention on this site a.s.a.p.

Most of the troops had fought in the A.Z.W. as had many of the colonial units.

Hope this is in order, Alan and Peter.

Trevor,

Sikukhuni (or Sekukuni - many spellings!) was a Bapedi chief. The were two campaigns to oust him the first starting in 1878 (and quite unsuccessful) before being interrupted by the Zulu campaign.

After the Zulu War was done the campaign against Sekukuni was resumed. As Ron said a lot of the units involved in this campaign had been in the Zulu war.

The following link will take you to a good account of the campaign:

And for the first campaign:
