1st February 2002WOUNDING OF CORPORAL ALLEN IN "ZULU"
By glenn
Hopefully more of you out there noticed this error in the movie Zulu. In the scene where the soldiers are firing at the smoke on the hill, private Hitch gets on top of the mealie bags to get a better shot at the Zulus. He is hit in the leg and wounded. Corporal Allen comes to assist him and also gets wounded. In the scene Allen gets wounded in the right shoulder, but for the rest of the movie his left shoulder is bandaged. That's kind of interesting.

It is also interesting to note that in the battle it was Hitch who got shot in the shoulder.
The more time you view 'Zulu' the bigger load of rubbish it appears.
Roll on the remake

David,
Point taken, but..."Zulu" a "load of rubbish"?
Sir, you shock me.

Hi! Note also for goofs in Zulu
.Hook bayoneting a Zulu to the hospital wall but the bayonet goes under the Zulus' armpit as the mark on the wall would suggest.
.When the bloke in the slouch hat walks behind Chard and is shot it cuts to something else and when it shows the dead man again his rifle has a bayonet on it that wasn't previously there!
.A large flash of light on the hillside when Bromhead rushes over to assist Chard after Chard is wounded, probably a car or camera????
.A Zulu in the first assault seems to have a sort of dark grey body armour on?
.In the scene where there are two ranks of soldiers firing in turn and moving forward they all seem to have bolt action rifles?
.When the hospital catches alight you can see a black flaming object used to light the thatch!(This may be a rifle)
I am thirteen and have watched Zulu since I was four! Only recently have I noticed these mistakes! This may be a good section to add to the site Peter? Keep looking out for goofs everyone! God Bless 'ZULU'!!!

On the subject of goofs, there's one nobody seems to have noticed in that lull before the attack on the hospital. Hook is walking toward the door to the hallway, with his suspenders DOWN. He gets to the door and speaks to Hughes ("There's some brandy in Reynolds's medical cabinet," etc.) and his suspenders are UP. Then he goes back into the ward and his suspenders are magically DOWN again.
(Glenn, you have a good eye for goofs. I must have seen "Zulu" a hundred times before I noticed the suspender bit.)

Diana....must you go on about suspenders??!!.in the U.K they are what holds a lady's stockings up!!
Yours.....imaginatively.

Keith,
Whoops! Not wishing to overheat anybody's imagination, nor to impugn Hooky's butchness, maybe I should have said "braces." But here in the US, "braces" straighten teeth, while stockings are held up by a "garter belt").

Hi Diana,
As well as the 'goofs' pay attention to the dialogue, its not how Victorians would hae talked, but pure 1960's tree hugging hipp anti war crap. (With apologies to South Park) Reynolds remarks to Chard at the hospital "Damn you Chard, damn all you butchers". This from a man of Reynold's experience. I think not. Zulu like Zulu Dawn is good entertainment for a wet Sunday afternoon, but as a historical document, never.
About those suspenders?

another smaller goof is during the initial onslaught when the induna is testing the British fire power with the lives of his warriors. Initially Bromhead is issuing orders for the men manning that sector to volley fire at 100 yards. After several volleys, he eventually issues another order to fire at will. Do you notice that there is a hesitation of firing until private Owen (the singing Baritone) has a chance to say a line to his pard, thanking Bromhead to allow them to fire at will. After that line, the whole line erupts into independent firing.

Hi everyone
Despite the goofs it's still the best war film ever. Some of the inaccuracies are the very things that make it a great film. No one sang at Rorke's Drift but what would the film be like without "Men of Harlech". The Zulu salute at the end sends tingles down the back of my nack...which brings us back to the suspenders....

Sorry
It should read "back of my NECK"

If you watch very carefully you will see a stocky Zulu get bayoneted during the first attack looking from the side of the barricade.

Later on the same Zulu is bayoneted looking from the behind the barricade (obviously a 2nd unit set up)

Also when the cheetah is running away from Bromhead you can see something running through the trees to it's right (trainer?)
