24th January 2002New Version of 'Zulu'
By Martin Everett
Many visitors to this site have raised the possibilty of a new version of the movie 'Zulu'. Has anyone any suggestions as to which actors should play the key roles if a new film is made.

OK here goes.
Chris Tucker as Cetchweyo (please excuse me for spelling it wrongly, I'm sure I have)
Ardal O'Hanlon as Otto Witt (but in the style of Dougal McGuire)
Arnold Schwarzenegger as Schiess
Hugh Grant as Cole (just so he's out of the way quickly)
Robert De Niro as Chard
Joe Pesci as Bromhead (can you see where I'm headed with this one?)
Vinnie Jones as Hook
Sorry, got my flippant head on again.

Eddie,
take it off.

Personally I do not think you could have another Chard other than Stanley Baker. However, how about Mel Gibson as Gonville Bromhead. Furthermore, it was a shame Richard Burton did not play an acting role in the film do you not think.

Again, my sincerest apologies.
I actually tried to think of a serious cast list but with no joy. Would you make a "Star Wars" film and cast anyone but Harrison Ford as Han Solo? Some roles seem to "belong" to actors and I think that counts for most of the cast of Zulu. Whatever the title said it wouldn't be Zulu. There would be the latest special effects with "Private Ryan" style carnage, can you imagine what some of today's directors would do with it? Zulu was never too graphic despite it's subject matter and for me that is part of it's appeal. Also with the film industry's current penchant for portraying the English as the bad guys (I know it was the British army but since when do film makers care about facts?), what a wonderful opportunity to smear the names of the brave men of Rorke's Drift. I'll stick with Cy enfield's version if it's ok with everyone else.

My apologies too for missing the capital.
Cy Enfield I meant.

Eddie,
don't want to be awkward but it's Cy Endfield. Made the same mistake myself in the past.

Well Sean Bean would have to be in it,i think the actor who plays Des Kavanar from the bill could be hooky,I would cut out the De witts altogether,i am not sure weather a reamake is a good idea,if the graphic realism of saving private ryan was used it would be a 15 certificate limiting its audience

Who is this Des Kavanar and why do you think he'd make an acceptable Hook? Just curious--I've never heard of him.

I think the late Ollie Reed would have made a good Otto witt,he wouldn`t have needed much persuading to get drunk. Then offers the whole impi outside the barricades for a fight.Seriously i`m a big fan of Kenneth Brannagh ,I think he `d be agood Bromhead.

There's one problem with all the suggestions.
Too many Englishmen playing the roles of the heroes.
I think we should just have Welsh, Scottish or Canadian actors in the movie as generally these lads are a lot tougher then the Brits.
Brit actors are too effeminate.

So the Welsh and the Scots aren't British? That'll come as a shock to some of them! If not, how come Neil Jenkins and Gavin Hastings have played for the British Lions?
29th January 2002Greg king
Yes Stephen,so tough that that the Scots or welsh might have a chance of winning the 5 nations this year!not!! I cant think of any canadian actors off hand?besides the aforementioned may all be tough ,but they need some brains to lead them.Chin Chin old boy!

Now, now, no squabbling among the members of the current and former British Empire!! It a commonly know fact that if you want the right stock of peoples to get the job done you have to look to the Austrialians. They did the dirty work and served as cannon fodder for the Brits during the Boer War, WWI and WWII, in addition to serving with the US in Korea and Vietnam. Need I go on?

In the international sporting arena, it's no contest also: cricket (2 national teams), and just who are the All Blacks and Springboks anyway? Do they play rugby?? I though that was the domain of the Wallabies.

Struth Mate!!!

Hugh, you`ve hit the nail right on the head .In your message you refer to the word `STOCK`or should we say`STOCKS` which all us poms know! Australians or their decendents are very familiar with . Due largely to being locked in before their deportation to the colonies!!Chuck us a steak on the barbie mate.

This has no relervece to the heros or villians at Rorkes Drift but England gave the Jocks a bloody nose yesterday.and will do the same to the rest of the other 5 nations. Espescillly to the French as they have never got over the slapping they got at Agiencourt. If the spelling is bad just blame me for being an Englishman.

Ladies and gents, I think we ought to draw a veil over this topic. The film 'Zulu', like 'The Third Man', cannot be repeated. If I ever I see a Hollywood version of either film (esp. with Mel Gibson, Tom Cruise or other non-entities), then it's war!
5th February 2002Jay and Paul
Jeremy Irons as Lt Bromhead! Mel Gibson and Tom Cruise are far too short to see over the boxes and mealie bags!Hugh Campbell, you got to learn how to spell "Australian" before you boast about being one!

James Earl Jones as the corpulent induna who gets felled by Dunbar?

The guy who played the Titanic Captain as Ammunition Smith - he corners all the Smith roles
